DESCRIPTION:
CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES IN YORK. Applicants working toward provisional licensure may be considered. Under limited supervision, provides advanced professional counseling and treatment for chemically dependent residents of a state owned/operated facility. Incumbents of this class perform independently receiving minimal supervision/direction through conferences/staff meetings with the supervisor. Incumbents may be responsible for coordination of the activities of other chemical dependency counselors.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Facilitate educational, individual, and/or group counseling sessions related to substance abuse. Plan, review, and revise inmate/parolee programs/treatment plans; complete parole progress reports/personalized plans, maintain written documentation, files, and reports; serve on assigned committees; perform evaluations/ personal history reviews; plan follow up treatment services for clients.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIREMENTS:Nebraska license as an Alcohol/Drug Abuse Counselor.

PREFERRED: Experience working with an incarcerated population; work experience in substance abuse treatment area. Bachelors degree in Behavioral Science field preferred. Either fully or provisionally licensed to practice as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor in Nebraska.

OTHER: PLADCs, and those working toward provisional licensure, will be considered at lesser salary. Applicants with a high school education or equivalent must complete the following core courses within 18 months of employment and must complete full licensure as a LADC within two years of employment:
  1. Counseling theories and techniques
  2. Group counseling
  3. Human growth and development
  4. Professional ethics and issues
  5. Alcohol/drug assessment, case planning and management
  6. Multicultural counseling
  7. Medical and psychological aspects of alcohol/drug use, abuse and addiction
  8. Clinical treatment issues in chemical dependency.
Proof of licensure and transcripts required prior to scheduled interview. Successful completion of background check. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug abuse, dependence or disorders: principles, methods and techniques of counseling, communication techniques; federal, state, and institution policies, procedures, rules and regulation; physical and mental problems of clients with alcohol and drug abuse, dependence or disorders, treatment plan format and development; methods and resources available for education clients in chemical dependency; personality tests. Skill in individual and group counseling, communicating effectively; screening, assessment and diagnosis; managing conflict; diffusing anger and maintaining a controlled environment. Ability to present information in an organized fashion; keep accurate and organized records; conduct research; score, evaluate, and interpret personality tests.
